The Potential Advantages of Newer Nuclear Concepts



Just a middle aged man babbling for several minutes about The Potential Advantages of our nuclear waste stock pile.
Problem: The USA did a lot of research into bomb technology based around U-235 and P-239 this research and the nuclear tests produced a lot of waste. All of this was paid for by taxes. Then industry opted for Light water U-235 reactors which has produced tones of hot waste that must be stored in cooling pools for decades in some cases and is deadly to life for many centuries to come.
In short – The USA has an awful lot of nuclear waste from many sources that must be stored and secured. Much of it at tax payer expense. It is a long term problem, both economic and environmental as it stands. A difficult one at all times. A very dreadful one if resources are pinched and the storage cannot be long term maintained.
Solution – This need not be the case. Those ‘wastes’ are hot, hot enough to boil water in some cases – so if they can boil water, why can’t they be used to produce electricity like any other source of heat? In fact if they can even heat water they can be used as heat sources. After all less than 2% of the energy will be used by the time it is ‘waste’ under our current light water reactor regime.
The material is nuclear fuel after all and while it may not ‘burn’ie be useful as fissile fuel any longer, in the conventional light water reactor, there is great evidence that it can be used in heavy water reactors, fast breeder type reactors, and other more exotic models.
